Sphere of scientific interests – physics of minerals, spectroscopy and crystallochemistry. S.L. Votyakov is a specialist in the field of physics of minerals and material science of natural substance. He contributed into the development of modern views on mineral substance, the development of mineral spectroscopy – a new scientific direction in the field of Earth Sciences. Votyakov. S.L. and the co-authors obtained a number of original results in the field of studying small point defects of the mineral structure. He traced the dynamics of changing the structure defectness at different thermodynamic and radiation influences under natural and model conditions. Mechanisms of formation and transformation of defects were suggested, their connection with physical-chemical features and the environments of mineral formation was established. In the works of Votyakov S.L. fundamental scientific principles of stability and evolution of the mineral structure defects, based on experimental data and theoretical modeling of their atomic and electronic structure, have been developed. He is the author (co-author) of more than 350 works, including 8 monographs, the author certificate and three patents. The main scientific works in the sphere of physics of minerals have been generalized in his monographs.
