Puchkov Victor Nikolaevich

Puchkov Viktor Nikolaevich is a geologist-theorist, an expert in the field of tectonics, stratigraphy and metallogy of the Urals. For 25 years he has been the Director of the Institute of Geology of the Ufa Scientific Center of Russian Academy of Sciences, Honored Scientist of the Republic of Bashkortostan.

The main works are devoted to the geology of the Urals and general theoretical questions of geotectonics. One of the first in the country raised the question of the necessity to revise the existing tectonic concepts based on neomobilism; he applied these principles to a new interpretation of the Ural tectonics; gave the most complete and deep monographic analysis of the geology of the Ural-Timan region. For the first time he carried out a tectonic-formational analysis of passive margins of continents with the aim of restoring their relics in the folded regions of the world. The results of these studies are further used in the compilation of tectonic maps of the largest regions. In the Urals and Central Asia new groups of fauna and, above all, the conodonts were introduced into a wide practice of geological survey and thematic work; he improved the methods of their searching and processing, which led to geological discoveries of paramount importance. He made a significant contribution to the stratigraphy of the Riphean stratotypic profile of the Urals. He laid the foundation for the ideas on the collision of island arc and  passive margin of the continent. He is the leader in studying the role of plumes in the geological history of the Urals. According to RISC he is the most quoted geologist of the Urals. In 2000−2016 he worked as a Professor and Head of the Department of Geology and Geomorphology of the Bashkir State University.

He is a member of the Russian Union of Writers, the author of three poetry collections and a book of memoirs.
