V.A. Koroteev is a leading researcher in the field of paleovolcanology, geodynamics and metallogeny of folded systems, theory of tectonic and metallogenic processes. He contributed considerably into the study of structural and substantial features of Paleozoic volcanism in the Urals, that caused the formation of the biggest copper–pyrite deposits which up to now provide our country with copper, zinc, gold and silver. V.A. Koroteev jointly with the scientists-confederators reconstructed deep structure and history of geological development of the Ural folded zone on the base of the lithosphere plate tectonics. The methodology of compiling the paleovolcanological maps introduced by him in the Urals is widely used during the investigation of other ancient folded belts. The results of studying the Southern Urals volcanism have been used in the process of compiling the design of paleo-volcanological map of the USSR for Early Paleozoic, Middle Paleozoic and Late Paleozoic profiles. Another important direction of the academician investigations is connected with the researches of the region ophiolithe complexes which present themselves fragments of ancient oceanic crust. Thanks to paleotectonic reconstructions for the first time for the Ural folded system the ophiolite associations of different paleodynamic nature have been distinguished, that served as the base for the forecasting of the platinum group metal and prospecting the chromite deposits. For the last decade V.A. Koroteev concentrated his efforts on the development of the problem of providing the refractory and aluminum industry of Russia with the alumina-containing natural raw materials, as well as the raw materials obtained during deep reworking of different kinds of technogenic waste of mining industry, metallurgical and other productions. V.A. Koroteev is the author and co-author of more than 400 scientific works, including 13 monographs (for the last 5 years were published 85 scientific works, including 7 monographs).
