Author Guidelines

LITHOSPHERE (Russia) publishes original research and review articles that meet the Journal’s scope and objectives. Manuscripts are submitted via an online submission system following registration on the Journal’s website. The submission process involves uploading a PDF file of the manuscript with all figures and tables as the mail file. Additional files include the manuscript as a docx. file, as well as the figures and tables with captions.
The authors shall be notified about the reviews’ decision in due course. For all questions, please contact the Journal’s editors either using our online submission system or via lithosphere@igg.uran.ru.

The files should be named in the Roman script. When needed, appropriate archive formats should be used (ZIP, ARJ, RAR, etc.).

The information about published issues  terms is presented on the Journal’s website https://www.lithosphere.ru

The authors are requested to follow the Guidelines provided below. The submissions failing to meet the Journal’s requirements shall not be considered.

  1. The Journal considers original research and review articles, which have not been previously published elsewhere, not exceeding 80,000 characters with spaces.
  2. Manuscripts are submitted in electronic format, both in pdf and docx formats. In order to ensure double-blind peer review, a PDF file of the manuscript, where all the author information is deleted, is provided. When making a submission, please upload the PDF file (without the author information) as the main document (Step 2), while the .docx files containing the text, figures, tables, and accompanying documents are uploaded as additional documents (Step 5).
  3. The manuscript metadata should contain a structured abstract of about 200–300 words. The abstract should be written in a concise and clear language, persuasive in its wording, devoid of redundant information. The abstract should be divided into the following sections: Research subject, Aim, Materials and Methods, Results, Conclusion.
  4. When submitting a manuscript in Russian, its title, abstract, full names of the author(s), affiliations, keywords, and acknowledgements should be translated into English. The text of the English abstract may not coincide with the Russian version, but should contain the same sections.
  5. Additional information includes information about the authors with their full names and patronymics, academic degrees, positions, affiliations, and postal and e-mail addresses, as well as the e-mail of the corresponding author.
  6. The Editorial Board reserves the right to reject articles that do not comply with the Guidelines (by notifying the corresponding author).
  7. After receiving the reviewers’ comments, the authors are requested to submit a revised version of the manuscript within the period of two months, providing information on corrections and changes made (Track Changes mode is enabled in Review Word section), as well as a file with responses to the reviewers’ comments.
  8. The Editors do not enter into discussions with the authors of rejected articles.

  2. Acknowledgements are given as a separate paragraph at the end of the article.
  3. References to grants are in italics.
  4. References. All sources are listed in alphabetical order (first Russian, then foreign editions). The in-text citations includes the sources in parentheses in chronological order: (Ivanov, 1959; Petrov, 2000; Smith, 2016).

The REFERENCES section is arranged in the Roman alphabetical order (Latin alphabet).

Russian full names should be given in Latin transliteration. Transliteration of the source titles is not required. However, they should be translated into English with a notion (In Russ.). References to articles by Russian authors that were published in English translations of Russian journals should be given in the Russian version, and in REFERENCES they should be placed with the appropriate requisites preserved (see reference examples).

Article Formatting

- MS Word

- single spacing

- Times New Roman

- Font Size 12 pt

- left margin 25 mm

- width alignment

- page numbering

Figures, tables and photographs should be attached as separate files. Please use

the International System of Units (SI) (GOST 9867–61) for physical units. The decimal sign is a period (00.1).

Periods are not used after a section title, article title, keyword list, headings of 1 and 2 levels, names of tables, dimensions (m – meter, g – gram, t – ton, s – second, min – minute, d – day, deg – degree, atm – atmosphere, mln – million, bln – billion, trl – trillion), in subscripts (Tпл – melting temperature, Tф.п. – phase transition temperature).

The period is placed after captions to figures, abstracts, etc.

Dashes with spaces (en dashes) denote a textual dash.

Dashes with no spaces (en dashes) denote a system, alloy, mixture, boundary, dependence, “from–to” interval. For example, “Jurassic–Cretaceous periods”, temperature 150–170°C. If numbers are negative, an ellipsis is put instead of a dash: –5... –7°C.

Hyphens with no spaces: P-T conditions, U-Pb age.

All abbreviations and acronyms should be deciphered when first mentioned, except for the commonly used ones (such as i.e.). North and south latitudes are designated as N and S, east and west longitudes as E and W, southwest as SW. We write EMF (electromotive force), CE (coefficient of efficiency). When abbreviating words with doubled consonants, only one is left: Kef, wt %. Newly introduced or rarely used terms and phrases are also subject to deciphering at the first mentioning.

Symbols of chemical elements should be typed in regular font, spacing out the superscript and subscript. Mineral designations should be written in italics, e.g.: Ol – olivine, Pl – plagioclase; fO2 – oxygen fugacity; temperature in Celsius – T, Kelvin – T, K; pressure – P or p; time – t, age – T (straight letters).

Formulas. The multiplication symbol – only “×” – is placed in cases with the number to its right: 2 × 10–3. Otherwise, it is omitted: 2y, 4pn.

Numbers of formulas and chemical reactions are enclosed in parentheses, written to the right of the formula; punctuation marks are placed in front of the number. In the text, formula numbers should appear in parentheses, for example: formulas (1)–(3).

Dimensional values are separated from numbers by a space, except for degrees, percent, ppm. For complex dimensions both negative powers and brackets are permitted, but consistently throughout the article: J·mol–1·K–1 or J·(mol·K) –1, as well as J/(mol·K). When listing or in numerical intervals, the dimension is given only for the last number (18–20 J/mol), except for the angle degrees. Dimensions of variables are written with a comma (E, kJ/mol) throughout the text, including captions to figures and notations of axes in the figures.

Formulas and symbols are typeset consistently throughout the article.

Table Formatting. Each table in the paper version is placed on a separate page.

Column titles are written with capital letters. Repeated captions are replaced by quotation marks: – ”–; numbers in columns are repeated.

Information under the asterisks and notes on the table are in regular font, with a period at the end. There is no dash after the asterisk, and the first word is capitalized.

Tables are indicated by Arabic numerals in the order of their mentioning in the text. An example of a reference to a table: (Table 1). The place of the first reference to each table in the text should be marked in the left margin.

Table headings and notes are given in both Russian and English.

During the preparation of illustrations, the following rules should be observed.

Figure and Map Formatting. Diagrams, photographs and complex drawings in the journal are allowed to be printed both in color and in black and white. Simple drawings are printed only in black and white.

Drawings should be of a size appropriate to their informative value, be legible, and retain their clarity after printing. The size and design of the similar figures should be consistent throughout the article.

Line numbers in the figures are in italics without brackets consistently throughout the article (i.e., both in the text and in the figure captions); numbers of legends are written in regular font. When using composite figures, the numbering of their constituent parts is used in Russian lowercase letters: а, б, etc. (regular font Times New Roman, 12 pt). Other figures and letters and inscriptions are in the same font, size 10 (recommended), 8 (if necessary), but not less than 6 points. Decimal and integer parts of numbers are separated by a period.

The recommended line thickness is 0.2 mm (0.5 pt). No thinner lines are used. Thicker lines should not exceed 0.75 mm (2 pt) width when necessary. The serifs on the axes of the chart are inward, and the numbers on the axes are typed outward. The quantity of them should not be excessive.

The figure must be properly referenced in the text. An example of a reference: 1) Figure 1a, curve 2; 2) Figure 2а–в; 3) (Figure 1). The place of the first mention of each figure in the text should be marked in the left margin.

Recommended size of illustrations: 85 mm width (column width), maximum 237 mm height including figure caption; 120–175 mm width (vertical page width), maximum 237 mm height together with figure caption; 200–237 mm width (horizontal page width), maximum 175 mm height together with figure caption.

For maps, the scale and north–south direction (marked with a standard arrow) should be indicated.

Figures should be drawn in Vector Graphics editors and presented in CorelDRAW (.cdr) and Adobe Illustrator (.ai) formats (preferably). Raster graphics (photos, scanned materials) are provided in JPG format (saving should be done in maximum or high quality) or TIF. Raster graphics resolution should be no less than 600 dpi for black and white pictures (Bitmap mode) and no less than 300 dpi for photographs.

All captions should be in Russian and English. For the authors submitting their manuscripts in English and are not fluent in Russian, the Journal provides assistance in translating the metadata and figure/table captions into Russian.
