В статье рассмотрено современное состояние общей шкалы каменноугольной системы и предложено ее деление на две подсистемы (миссисипий и пенсильваний), каждая из которых делится на два отдела. В миссисипий выделен турнейский отдел с астьерским и ивуарским ярусами и визейский отдел с молиньякским, ливийским, варнантским и серпуховским ярусами. Пенсильванская подсистема может быть разделена на вестфальский (башкирский и московский ярусы) и стефанский (касимовский и гжельский ярусы) отделы.
